Gujarat State Open School - Class 9th (Secondary Level)

The 9th Class programme under Gujarat State Open School (GSOS) is equivalent to the Class IX of the formal school system. This course is specially designed for students who could not continue their studies through regular schooling due to various reasons. GSOS provides flexible learning opportunities through open and distance learning (ODL) mode, allowing students to study at their own pace and convenience.

The Secondary Education (9th Class) is the foundation level for higher secondary education. GSOS follows the curriculum prescribed by the State Government and is recognized by the Gujarat State Education Board. The programme aims to provide quality education to all sections of society, especially to those who are economically and socially backward, school dropouts, working professionals, and those living in remote areas.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Minimum age: 14 years as on 31st July of the admission year.
  • There is no upper age limit for admission to 9th class.
  • The candidate must be literate and able to read and write basic Hindi/Gujarati.
  • No formal qualification is required for admission to 9th class.
  • Students who have previously studied in a recognized school but dropped out can also apply.

Subjects Offered in 9th Class

Students have to choose a minimum of 5 subjects and can opt for a maximum of 7 subjects. At least one language subject is compulsory.

Subject Selection Guidelines

  • A student must select at least one language subject (Hindi, English or Gujarati).
  • Maximum two language subjects can be chosen.
  • Core subjects (Mathematics, Science, Social Science) are recommended but not mandatory.
  • Students can choose optional subjects as per their interest and future career plans.
  • Subject change is allowed within 30 days of admission.

Scheme of Studies

  • The course duration is minimum 1 year and maximum 5 years for completion.
  • Students can complete the course at their own pace within the maximum time limit.
  • Study materials (Self Learning Material - SLM) will be provided in Hindi, English & Gujarati medium.
  • Personal Contact Programmes (PCP) are conducted at study centers for doubt clearing.
  • Students can transfer credits from other recognized boards (subject to GSOS rules).
  • Continuous assessment through Tutor Marked Assignments (TMA).

Admission Process

Admissions are conducted twice a year in two cycles:

Required Documents:

  • Date of Birth Certificate (Birth Certificate / School Leaving Certificate)
  • Recent Passport Size Photographs (4 copies)
  • Address Proof (Aadhar Card / Ration Card / Voter ID)
  • Previous School Leaving Certificate (if applicable)
  • Caste Certificate (for SC/ST/OBC candidates)

Examination Pattern

  • Public examinations are conducted twice a year in April-May and October-November.
  • Students can appear for one or more subjects as per their preparation level.
  • Minimum pass marks for each subject is 33%.
  • There is no negative marking in the examination.
  • Students who fail in any subject can reappear in the next examination.
  • There is no limit on the number of attempts within the maximum course duration.
  • Tutor Marked Assignments (TMA) carry 20% weightage in final evaluation.
  • Practical examinations are conducted for Science and Home Science subjects.
